An alcoholic might stay in a residential treatment facility for an extended period of time. He or she can learn all about the disease model and the various approaches to and modalities of alcoholism treatment. But what happens when that person walks into a market, grocery shopping for the first time? What products are most strongly marketed and sold in every grocery store in this country? Beer, wine, and whiskey look so good, so inviting, so harmless while resting on those grocery store shelves.
Now what's this alcoholic supposed to do? Fresh out of treatment, with all the best intentions, more alcoholics begin a relapse in grocery store aisles than anywhere else.
Sober Coaching & Sober Companionship are relatively new pieces of the overall treatment puzzle. The Sober Coach augments and strengthens the foundation built by static treatment models such as inpatient or outpatient rehab & more traditional therapeutic approaches.
One thing your Sober Companion knows is this: many alcoholics have spent years going to the same grocery stores. They knows every aisle. They know the clerks & they know the alcoholic. Whatever else they might have purchased in that store, they always purchased alcohol.
